Standard Skills are rated from Level 1 (Novice) to Level 5 (Expert). They help to define where team members can improve professionally or from a personal development perspective. To give breakdown of these...

Skill levels

Level

Name

In short

1

Novice

You understand what the Skill is and why it matters.

2

Advanced Beginner

You can do it with supervision, and expect to need help.

3

Competent

You can usually do it on your own, with occasional help from an expert.

4

Proficient

You do it without help, and others come to you with difficult questions.

5

Expert

You're known as the expert and can guide others.

No Rating means nobody has reviewed the skill yet, including you.

Gap statuses

If Skills are assigned to a Job Role, or are set by an Admin or Manager, then they'll have the following target status labels...

  • Gap - the Skill level required for your Role, is below expectation.

  • Met - you posses the expected level for your Job Role.

  • Exceeded - you've proven to hold knowledge greater than what's required.

No Review means nobody has reviewed the Skill yet.

If more than one target applies, HowNow uses the first of these: your current job role's level, a target an Admin or Manager set, or your career target role.

Target role statuses

These apply to skills for a career target role you've chosen on Grow.

Status

Meaning

Ready

You're at or above the level the target role needs.

Developing

You're below it, but your level went up at your last review.

Stretch

You're below it and your level hasn't gone up yet.

When there's no status

  • A skill has no status until it has both a rating and a target level. A rated skill without a target shows No Target.

  • Skills left over from a previous job role or a previous target role have no target, so they show No Target.
