A job role describes a job in your organisation, such as "Fitting Room Assistant", and lists the skills someone in that job needs, each with a target level from 1 to 5.
How it works
Admins set up job roles in Manage › Roles. Each has a name, an optional description and its required skills. A role can have up to 30 skills, unless your workspace has a different limit.
For each skill you set a Target Level, the level someone in the role is expected to reach:
Level | Name |
1 | Novice |
2 | Advanced Beginner |
3 | Competent |
4 | Proficient |
5 | Expert |
Roles can be your own or ready-made ones from the HowNow library. Admins choose skills by hand or let AI suggest them.
Each person has one job role at a time. Admins set it on the person's profile in Manage › People, not on the Roles page.
What people see
On Grow, people see their role's skills under For [role name], with the role's target level next to each one. For example, if Fitting Room Assistant requires Handling Complaints at level 3, everyone in that role sees Handling Complaints with a target of 3, and can rate themselves or ask for a review to close the gap.
If the role has no skills yet, they see "No skills for your role yet". People can also choose a different Target role to work towards, separate from their own job role.
When a role changes
HowNow updates everyone in the role in the background. Nobody is emailed.
Skill added: it appears on each person's Grow page.
Target level changed: everyone's target for that skill changes.
Skill removed: people who never rated it or were reviewed on it lose it. Anyone with a rating or review keeps it.
Role deleted: everyone loses the role. Skills they rated or were reviewed on stay.
Note: If your workspace locks learner skills, role changes don't reach people's profiles. If job roles come from your HR system, you may not be able to edit them in HowNow.
Who uses it
Admins create roles, map skills, set target levels and give people their role.
Managers use their team's roles to see the levels people are expected to reach.
Learners see their role's skills on Grow and work towards the targets.
