Sequential Learning can be used for Pathways, to keep your Users learning the right content for their level, before progressing to the next stage. This helps with their understanding of the material, giving structure to the upskilling process.

The Sequential Learning option is activated from the Settings slide-out screen, when creating/editing your Pathway.

Before starting on a Sequential version, first learn the fundamentals of How to create a Pathway.

Switch on the toggle button and select Save Changes.

Once published, the assigned Users will see the Pathway layout, with the first content item automatically available for learning. All following content items will remain locked, until the initial content item has been completed, followed by the next item in the line-up, and so on.

Note✨: Completion for Live Class, Webinar and Event is confirmed via the User having the “Attended” status.

Important : Do remember, if a content item is re-arranged at a later time, then it will become locked or made available (unlocked), depending on the User’s current progress. There are two distinct examples of this…

Example 1

Your Pathway follows this sequence:

  • Starting with Course A > Course B > Course C > Course D > Course E

  • Course A is unlocked by default > The User completes it

  • Course B is now unlocked (while Courses C, D and E remain locked)

  • The Author later moves Course E above B

This means: All Courses shift down, so Course B now becomes locked, as Course E has taken its place. Courses C and D remain locked as before.

Example 2

Your Pathway follows this sequence:

  • Starting with Nugget A > Nugget B > Nugget C > Nugget D > Nugget E

  • Nugget A is unlocked by default

  • The Author later adds Nugget Q - in between C and D - that the User had completed previously, long before the creation of the Pathway.

This means: All the original Nuggets after Nugget A, still remain locked. The addition of completed content from outside of the Pathway doesn’t affect the sequence.

Insights

When viewing your Pathway’s insights - via the Content subpage - you will get a visual representation of the sequence currently in place, as well as the User’s progress.

This can be seen when clicking View Details of a User, in the Progress column.

Note✨: There are some points to be aware of when it comes to Sequential Pathways…

  • Although locked within the Pathway, Users will still have access to internal content outside of the Pathway.

  • SCORM files that have been replaced within a SCORM Course won’t affect the progress of the content under it, if the content is in progress.

  • If there are two SCORM Courses (A and B) and both are complete, the status will change to Not Started, if their files are removed.

    • If SCORM Course A is later unlocked but Not Started, SCORM B will remain locked.

  • Expiry Dates (Renewal Cycles) won’t affect an unlocked SCORM Course. Once it has been completed the first time, it is unlocked thereafter.

  • If a User completes third-party Learning Library content (LinkedIn Learning, Udemy, etc.) that is featured as a Step in a Pathway, their progress will be updated within the 24-hour sync.

  • For Organisations using Bookboon as a Learning Library: completion isn’t trackable based on a User going through each section of its content. Therefore, HowNow will track completion for Bookboon content in the same way as Nuggets - once the User opens the content, it will be considered as complete.
