Take a timed Assessment

How to complete an Assessment that is time sensitive .

Select Start Assessment to start the timer, leave the assessment to pause it, and anything you've answered is submitted automatically when time runs out.

Some assessments have a time limit set by the course author. The timer only runs while you have the assessment open, and anything you've answered is submitted when it reaches zero.

Before you start

A timed assessment shows a clock and its time limit next to it under Content Covered on the course page, for example 1 min. Open it in one browser tab only.

Take the assessment

  1. Open the course and select the timed assessment.

  2. In Your timer is about to start, select Start Assessment. If you're not ready, select Cancel: you go back to the course page and the timer doesn't start.

  3. Answer each question and select the arrow in the question card to save it.

  4. On the last question, select Save & Finish before the time runs out.

Your attempt appears under Your Attempts: scored straight away if it's all multiple choice, or Pending until a marker gets to it.

Pause the timer

To take a break, select Exit at the top of the page. The timer pauses while the assessment is closed and carries on when you open it again. Answers you saved with the arrow are kept.

When time runs out

Remember❗: When the timer reaches zero, your answers are saved and you can't add or change any.

A Time's Up! message appears. Select OK. If the author lets you choose your marker, the message asks you to select a marker for your assessment instead: choose one or leave it blank, then select Submit.

Questions you didn't reach score zero. For example, if you answer one of two equally weighted questions correctly, you score 50%.

Good to know

  • If you open the assessment in a second tab, the first tab closes the assessment and goes back to the course page. Keep to one tab, as switching can use up time on your timer.

  • If time runs out before you reach a written question, there's nothing left to mark, so your score appears straight away.

  • If you retake a timed assessment, you get the full time limit again.
