Mark Assessment submissions

Open answer and upload questions need a person to mark them. Submissions waiting for you arrive in your Inbox.

Before you start

You can mark a submission if you're the course's author or a collaborator, or the author added you as a marker in the assessment's settings. If the learner chose a specific marker, only that person gets the submission.

Mark a submission

  1. In the sidebar, select Inbox, then select the assessment submission under Open. It shows Not marked and how many questions need marking.

  2. Select Mark Submission.

  3. Read the Learner's Answer, then enter a number in Your Mark. It must be between 0 and the question's maximum.

  4. Optionally, add Feedback for the learner (up to 400 characters). For example: "Good reassurance and a clear check on the till. Next time, give the customer a date to call back."

  5. Select Save & Next to move to the next question. Repeat until every question has a mark.

  6. On the last question, select Save & Submit, then Submit to confirm.

Note: The learner is notified as soon as you submit, and you can't change the marks afterwards. Check each mark before you confirm.

Submit Your Marking? confirmation saying the learner will be notified

You'll see Assessment marked and moved to history. The submission moves to History, with the result (for example Passed • 90%) and your name under Marked by.

Finish marking later

Select Save & Exit at any point. The marks you've saved are kept, and when you select Mark Submission again you carry on where you left off.

Note: A question needs a mark before it can be saved. If you exit with an empty mark, Unsaved Changes warns you that changes to that question will be lost.

Mark from Manage › Learning

You can also start from the course. Select Manage › Learning, open the course, select View All Assessments, then select View Submissions from the assessment's menu. Open the menu in the learner's row and select Mark Submission. It only appears while the submission is waiting to be marked.

Good to know

  • Multiple choice questions are marked automatically. If an assessment mixes question types, select All to see the auto-scored answers alongside the ones you need to mark. Save your mark before switching between Requires marking and All, or it's cleared.

  • If several people can mark the assessment, the first person to submit their marking marks it.
