How assigned learning works

Understand the basics of assigning learners to content.

Assigning learning tells HowNow who should take a piece of published content. Each assignment is saved as a rule on that content, and the content appears in each matching person's Assigned Learning.

How it works

Wherever you assign from, you add to the same list of rules, shown in the content's Assign Learners panel (Manage › Content, then ... › Assign Learners):

Where you assign from

What's added to the content

Assign Learners on the content

The people, groups or rules you choose

Manage › People or Manage › Team

"Learners are ..." with each person's name

Manage › Groups

"Group is ..." for the group

For example, if you assign Handling Customer Complaints to the Returns Desk Team group from Manage › Groups, the course's panel then shows "Group is Returns Desk Team" alongside "Learners are ..." for anyone already assigned by name.

Groups and rules stay live. People who join the group, or start matching a rule, are assigned automatically. People who leave the group or stop matching are unassigned. People added by name stay assigned until someone removes them.

Due dates and mandatory status come from the content. You can't set them when you assign, so every assignment gets the content's own settings.

Removing an assignment takes away access, not progress. People lose the item once nothing else assigns it to them, but their progress records are kept.

Who gets notified

  • People who have signed in before get a notification in HowNow, such as "You have been added to Bagging Fragile Items Safely".

  • They also get an email, such as "Bagging Fragile Items Safely has been shared with you by" followed by your name, if Send an email notification to all assigned users is on in the content's Assign Learners panel. This setting is saved per item, so check it before you assign.

  • People who have never signed in, people who have already completed the item and its author get neither.

Who can assign

  • Admins can assign any published content.

  • Managers and Contributors can assign content they created or collaborate on, plus content that's assigned to them with Redistribution turned on.

  • Managers can assign to groups they manage, and line managers can assign to their team.
