How public and private Spaces differ

A Space's Permissions setting is either Public or Private. It decides who can find the Space and how they get in.

How it works

Public: anyone in your workspace can find the Space in Search, open it from a link, read it and select Join. Members can leave and rejoin whenever they like.

Private: only members can open it. Anyone else who opens the link sees You don't have access to this page, and it doesn't appear in their search results. The only way in is to be added by an owner or moderator, including after someone leaves. Private Spaces show a padlock in the sidebar's Spaces list.

New Spaces are Private unless you change Permissions when you create them. Owners and moderators can switch it later in the Space's settings.

For example, a Store Opening Team Space that anyone helping on opening day can join works well as Public. A Store Managers Huddle for managers only should be Private.

Note: Switching a Space to Private removes access straight away for everyone who isn't a member, even if they have the link.
