Make someone an owner or moderator of a Space

Written by Sunil Sharma

Give someone more control of a Space by making them a moderator or owner, or move them back to member.

Before you start

  • You need to be an Owner or Moderator of the Space. Moderators can switch people between Moderator and Member only.

  • The person must already be in the Space. If not, add them and pick their role as you do.

Change a role

  1. Open the Space and select the member count in the Space header (for example 3 members). Settings opens on Members.

  2. Next to the person, open the role menu and choose a role:

    • Moderator: helps run the Space, including settings, tabs, members and pinned posts.

    • Owner: everything a moderator can do, plus making other owners and deleting the Space.

    • Member: takes part but can't manage anything.

The role menu open next to a member, with Moderator highlighted

  3. Select Save Changes.

Note: The person gets a HowNow notification, such as You're a moderator of [Space].

You'll see Space updated successfully, and the person's new role shows in the list and next to their posts.

When a role can't be changed

The role menu is greyed out in these cases. Hover over it to see why.

  • The Space's creator is always an owner.

  • Your own role. Ask another owner to change it.

  • An owner, if you're a moderator. Only owners can change another owner's role.

  • Someone with Read Only workspace access can only be a member.
