Make content mandatory

Written by Sunil Sharma

Mark content as mandatory when everyone it's assigned to must complete it (or attend it, for a session), such as compliance training or a new-starter course.

Before you start

  • You need to be an Admin, or the content's author, collaborator or verifier.

  • Mandatory doesn't assign the content to anyone. Only people it's assigned to see it as mandatory, so assign it as well.

Make one item mandatory

  1. In the sidebar, select Manage › Content.

  2. On the content's row, select ..., then More › Manage Settings.

  3. Turn on Mark as Mandatory.

The Manage Settings panel with Mark as Mandatory highlighted

  4. Select Save Changes. You'll see "Settings saved."

Assigned learners now see it in the Mandatory tab on their Home page. A number on the tab shows new mandatory items until they open it.

Note: No email or notification is sent when you mark content as mandatory. To let people know, turn on the email when you assign it.

You can also turn on Mark as Mandatory in the editor: on the Release & Deadline step for a course, or in Settings for a nugget.

Make several items mandatory

  1. In Manage › Content, tick the rows you want.

  2. Select Make Mandatory in the bar that appears.

There's no confirmation step. If some items can't be made mandatory, HowNow tells you which ones and why.

Good to know

  • Mandatory content shows in the Mandatory tab only when its Content Visibility is Visible Everywhere or Visible in Search, Channels, and Learning.

  • Once a learner completes an item, it leaves their Mandatory tab.

  • Add a deadline so people know when it's due.

  • Managers can follow progress.
