Organise a pathway into sections

S
Written by Sunil Sharma

Sections group a pathway's steps into stages, such as "Week 1: Our returns policy" and "Week 2: Handling difficult returns". Learners see each section's title, description and number of steps.

Before you start

You need to be the pathway's author or a collaborator, with Admin, Manager or Contributor access.

Add a section

  1. Open the pathway in the editor.

  2. Choose where the section goes:

    • Empty pathway: select New Section in the list of options.

    • Pathway with steps: hover just to the left of the step or section the new section should follow. Select +, then New Section.

  3. Select Section Title and type your title (up to 150 characters). The placeholder is

saved as real text, so learners see it if you don't replace it.

  4. Replace Section Description with a line about what this stage covers (up to 500 characters), or delete it if you don't need one.

  5. Select Add Step inside the section, choose a source such as My Content, add the items you want, then select Done.

A new section with its title, description and Add Step button

Changes save as you go. The section shows its step count, with the new steps inside it.

Move or remove a section

  • Move: hover to the left of the section and drag it by the dotted handle. Its steps move with it.

  • Remove: hover to the left of the section and select the bin icon. Then choose:

    • Remove Section and Step: deletes the section and every step in it.

    • Remove Section: deletes only the section, and its steps stay in the pathway.

Remember: Removing a section can't be undone. On a published pathway, removing steps changes learners' progress straight away

Good to know

  • Empty sections disappear when you publish. HowNow warns you before it removes them.

  • Sections aren't steps. They don't count towards the step count or the 100-step limit.

  • Steps don't have to be in a section. You can mix sections with standalone steps.
