How to set up Sequential Learning

Make learners complete pathway steps in order.

Turn on Sequential Learning when later steps build on earlier ones, for example when learners need the basics before they handle refunds. Learners then work through the pathway from top to bottom.

Before you start

Only the pathway's author and its collaborators can change its settings.

Turn on sequential learning

  1. Open the pathway in the editor. If it's already published, open it and select Edit, then Continue.

  2. Select the gear icon (Configure Pathway Settings) at the top of the page.

  3. Turn on Sequential Learning, then select Save Changes.

Remember: On a published pathway this takes effect for assigned learners straight away.

  4. Check the order of your steps, because learners must follow it. Drag a step by its handle to move it.

  5. Select the eye icon (Preview Mode) to check the result. Every step after the first shows a padlock until the steps above it are done.

A pathway in preview: the second step is greyed out with a padlock and the message "This Pathway requires sequential access. Unlock this step by completing all steps above."

Good to know

  • Section headings never lock, so learners don't need to complete them.

  • Earlier work counts. If a learner has already started, booked or finished a step's content elsewhere, for example a course they completed on its own or a live class they've booked, that step is open to them. Steps they've completed show a tick.

  • Rewards follow their own rule: a badge or certificate step unlocks once every content step above it is complete.
