Import skills from a CSV file

S
Written by Sunil Sharma

Add many skills to your skill library at once by uploading a CSV file.

Before you start

  • You need Admin access, and Create Skill must be available.

  • Prepare a CSV file with a header row and one skill per row:

Skill Name

Description

Gift Wrapping Service

Wrapping purchases neatly at the till, including seasonal gift options.

Stock Room Organisation

Keeping the stock room tidy, labelled and easy to pick from.

Skill Name is required and Description is optional. The headers "Name" and "desc" also work. Save the file as CSV UTF-8 so accented characters import correctly.

Import the file

  1. In the sidebar, select Manage › Skills.

  2. Select Create Skill, then Import via CSV at the top of the panel.

  3. If you don't have a file yet, select Download Template, fill it in and save it as a CSV.

  4. Select Upload Files and choose your file, or drag it into the box. The upload starts straight away.

Note: Keep the file under 5 MB (the window says 10 MB, but larger files are rejected) and under 1,000 rows. A file with more rows adds nothing and the notification says 0 skills were attempted, so split long lists into several files.

You see "Skills are being added. This may take a moment." The new skills appear in the Skills list within a minute or so; refresh the page if you don't see them.

When the import finishes, you get a notification such as "Out of the 2 skills you attempted to upload, 1 skill has been added."

Rows that are skipped

HowNow adds every valid row and skips a row if:

  • the skill name is empty

  • a skill with that name already exists, or appears earlier in the file (capitals don't count)

  • the name is over 191 characters, or the description is over 250.

The notification tells you how many rows were added, but not which ones were skipped, so compare the list with your file.

Good to know

  • Imported skills aren't given to anyone. Assign them to people or map them to job roles afterwards.

  • If nothing was added, see My skills CSV import failed or some skills weren't added.
