Get access to the HowNow API

S
Written by Sunil Sharma

The HowNow API lets your own systems, such as an HR or reporting tool, read and update your HowNow workspace automatically. There's no screen for API keys in HowNow.

Ask your HowNow customer success manager for a Client ID and Client Secret; your developers use them to connect your own systems to HowNow.

How it works

Getting access. Ask your customer success manager for API access. They give you a Client ID and Client Secret for your workspace.

Remember: Treat the Client ID and Client Secret like a password. Anyone who has them can change your workspace data, including adding, deactivating and deleting people.

What your developers need. Share the Client ID, the Client Secret and the technical reference, which is at your workspace address followed by /external-api-docs, for example yourcompany.hownow.app/external-api-docs.

What the API can do:

Area

Read

Change

People

List people, and see what's assigned to someone and what they've created

Add or update people; deactivate, reactivate or delete them

Groups

List groups and their members

—

Content

Search content, and see its details and who's on it

Record learning someone did elsewhere

Skills

List skills and who has them

Create skills, and add, update or remove people's skills

Job roles

List job roles

Create, update and delete job roles, and assign people to them

For example, your HR system could add each new starter to HowNow with the right job role on their first day, and deactivate them when they leave.

Remember: People added through the API are managed by the API. In Manage › People you can't edit their profile, change their access level, or deactivate or delete them. Make those changes in the connected system.

Who uses it

  • Admins request access and agree which systems use it.

  • Developers in your organisation, or a partner, build and run the integration.

For simple automations without code, such as adding people to groups.
