Add role-play scenarios to a Guru

Written by Sunil Sharma

Role-play scenarios give your Guru examples of the conversations your learners need to practise, such as a customer asking for a refund without a receipt. Scenarios are optional: without them, the Guru still creates role-plays from its context and skills.

Before you start

  • You need a Guru with a Name and Context and Purpose. Adding skills first gives you better suggestions.

  • Only the Guru's creator can add scenarios.

Write your own scenario

  1. Open your Guru in the editor. For a published Guru, expand Gurus in the sidebar, select it, then select ⋮ › Edit Guru.

  2. Select Configure on the Role-Play Scenarios card. If the Guru has no scenarios yet, an empty Scenario 1 form is already open. Otherwise, select Add Scenarios.

  3. In Scenario Title, enter a short name (up to 64 characters), for example "Refund request without a receipt".

  4. In Scenario Description, describe the situation, who the learner is talking to and what a good outcome looks like (up to 2,000 characters). For example: "A frustrated customer wants a cash refund for a kettle bought three weeks ago but has lost the receipt. The advisor should stay calm, explain the policy and offer an exchange or store credit."

  5. Select Create.

Note: HowNow doesn't check whether a scenario makes sense, so read it back before you save the Guru. A vague or empty description gives learners a weak role-play.

The scenario appears as a card on the Create Role-Play Scenarios page, with Add Scenarios below it for the next one.

Add a suggested scenario

Under Suggested Scenarios, select a scenario to add it to your list straight away, with no form to fill in. A new suggestion takes its place. To see a different pair, select the refresh icon. Suggestions are based on your Guru's context and skills.

Edit or delete a scenario

  • Edit: select the pencil icon on the scenario, change the text and select Save Changes on the scenario card (not the one at the top of the editor).

  • Delete: select the bin icon, then Yes, Delete in Delete Scenario?

  • You can't undo deleting a scenario.

Good to know

  • The Guru doesn't show your scenarios word for word. It uses them as inspiration and creates a fresh scenario for each learner, adapted to their job role. Learners can also ask to practise any situation within the Guru's topic.

  • On a published Guru, new, edited and deleted scenarios only reach learners when you select Save Changes.

  • Check the result by asking for a role-play in the Preview chat.
